| (LS) The ordinance to establish a Lewistown Borough Police Department was passed with a 4-2 vote last night. One of the dissenting votes came from councilman Nelson Rieffannacht who questioned the certification of William Herkert, who was named in a motion to hire as police chief. Rieffannacht was one of the members on the MCRP board who voted to fire Herkert as police chief for that department. Once that issue was resolved, Rieffannacht then questioned if Herkert, who is currently a Penn State instructor, would continue in that position after being hired as a borough police chief. Other council members protested the question saying that was appropriate for an executive session. Rieffannacht emphasized he had done his "homeowrk" to which Mayor Bargo inserted, "and it's not worth crap". That brought the gavel down to return the meeting to order & led to an executive session. Council members then returned to the public meeting & amended the motion. |
